dolmens lost and found

Mousse dolmens – first of three.

From the Lauriol dolmen, Bruno counsels us to continue along the track for 850 m. I didn’t think I could keep up a count of my strides for that long, so I paced out the first 50 which brought us to a tree or a bend, I can’t remember. Whichever – I then used that distance to ‘call’ the next 50 or 100, with further bends or bushes as markers. It worked well (and Bruno’s count was good too!) for around the 800 mark there indeed were the jagged tops of some orthostats to the left, a few paces off the track. A further help is to note the deep gully that one traverses on a bend – it comes 200 m. before the dolmen.

It is a long and very narrow dolmen: 6 m. by 80 cm. and is orientated like the Lauriol dolmen, N – S.

The capstone, or ‘table ‘, is not easily discernable amongst the broken stones around.

There are two others further west – but well off the track and in poor condition. They lie in La Coume des Morts or Deadmans Gulch, and remain for another foray.
